Mars landings

It is very exciting that there has been a successful landing on Mars. The pictures we have seen already are magnificent. Congratulations to NASA. However, a big raspberry to the US commentators who have been so derogatory about the British/European attempt that probably landed on Christmas Day but has since been silent.

Has everyone forgotten one particular previous failed attempt? My recollection is that, several years ago, a US attempt to land a spacecraft on the Red Planet failed unaccountably. When the project was examined in detail, it was realised that it had failed because the engineers involved had confused metric and imperial measurements. (See last posting.)
