The peace prize

Shirin Ebadi, an Iranian lawyer and human rights activist, has won the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize for her democratic and human rights work for women and children in Iran. Lech Walesa is apparently rather upset about this. He thinks that Pope John Paul II should have had it instead.

If the Pope had demonstrated a more civilised attitude to liberation theology, homosexuality, women priests, abortion and contraception, he might have had a better chance - I certainly didn't vote for him. I'm not unaware that Shirin's Islam doesn't fare too well against all these criteria, and that the Iranian clerical mafia are none too pleased. But Catholicim's absurd reverence for a woman of doubtful historical pedigree doesn't help the Papists much. Next time I'm on the Nobel prize committee, you may not be around, Karol Wojtyla, but it's never too late to confess your errors, repent and start to get them rectified, you know...
