The citizenship subject is in the news again:
Immigrants to the UK wishing to become British will take part in special language and citizenship classes from next year under major proposals being unveiled by the government. You can read more about it here. 'Josh' had a bit to say about the subject on 7th February, too (see 'Archives'). Then, I pointed out that our benefits (just look at Denmark's and Sweden's) were not the main magnet for immigrants - speaking English is. I went on to suggest that we should therefore
'make it an offence to speak English throughout the UK and teach the indigenous population Welsh'It looks as though the people dealing with the scheme have listened to me:
The two key requirements of the scheme were that new citizens should have a 'sufficient understanding of English, Welsh or Scots Gaelic'I think we could, with advantage, drop the 'English' requirement, don't you? We could simultaneously dissuade immigrants and restore our regional, dying languages.
There's one thing that worries me, though. I couldn't see anything about one national characteristic that all prospective Britons should have in abundance: the ability to lose gracefully. Think athletics, cricket, tennis, football... Failing's a sporting sine qua non here, effendi.
