Anna Lindh

I have just heard that Mrs Lindh, the Swedish politician attacked yesterday, has died. You can read about it here.

Following the unsolved murder of the Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme in 1986, one would have hoped that there would be no more incidents of that sort. The ability to approach politicians is extremely important.

About two years ago, while passing a Bagshot supermarket, I came across a serving cabinet minister of my acquaintance doing his shopping. He was unaccompanied and I was able to have a chat with him without interruption. I fear that the events in Sweden, normally such a stable, civilised model for the rest of us, will lead to security clampdowns here that will take politicians farther away from their constituents. Were I to try to speak to Mr X tomorrow, I would half-expect to be jumped upon by all manner of minders.
