Voices again

Unusually, Mrs Trellis has responded quickly to my requests for a simile. Yesterday, Josh asked her to describe Emily Proctor's voice. The pigeon has just arrived. I shall roast it gently...

But enough of cookery; Mrs T. offers the sublime suggestion of 'Like a corncrake gargling with aqua regia'.

For those of little ornithological bent, unlike Myfanwy Trellis, a corncrake is 'A common Eurasian rail [eh?], Crex crex, of fields and meadows, with a buff speckled plumage and reddish wings.' It has a particularly rasping call.

And for the lapsed chemists amongst us, aqua regia is a mixture of very concentrated nitric and hydrochloric acids.

Brilliant, eh?
