A sad day

Having yesterday regaled you with what was probably a hoax, I hope to be telling you of some others in the next few weeks. Meanwhile, I thought it appropriate to tell you what happened to a friend of mine, recently.

Eric Bloggett, an old school friend of mine with an amazing knowledge of wine, crashed his car almost outside Bagshot Mansion last week. (Too much quantity; not enough quality, I can tell you.)

The accident occurred at lunchtime. I heard the crash and rushed out with a glass of wine still in my hand. Eric was obviously in a bad way but he recognised me and I poured some of the precious dark fluid into his mouth.

'Chateau La Mission Haut Brion 1919,' he said and died. He was right, to the end.

[A similar story appears in Ambrose Bierce's The Enlarged Devil's Dictionary but the wine detail is unconvincing and I do not believe that 'The Enlarged Devil' ever reads (or writes) dictionaries.]
