This morning, as I awoke, I turned on BBC Radio 4 News, as has become my habit. I was pleased to hear the following news item, leading the programme:
Today is the birthday of His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. We offer him our loyal greetings.
They then played the national anthem, in full (only one verse, though).

Amid all the terrible goings on in the World, the Beeb still retains a sense of the relative importance of things. I mean, who wants to hear about the firemen's strike or progress on getting the UNMOVIC inspectors into place in Iraq? These are trivial events when we can be reminded that today is the birthday of the loveable Prince Charles. Who can claim that the Beeb displays socialist tendencies or republican sympathies when they can lead with such important news?

For followers of goings on at St James's Palace, the Italian paper La Republica has indicated the name of the perpetrator of the alleged rape on George Smith. Doubtless, they have got it wrong and/or my Italian has led me to draw the wrong conclusions. Do not be surprised if the name of Michael Fawcett, Prince Charles's personal assistant, features in the news when it does come out. Michael is already suspected of selling-off foreign gifts on behalf of Charles. I wonder what else there is to learn....
