I had my first virus several month ago and it took me several days to dig it out, so I resolved to be a bit more careful about keeping my antivirus software up-to-date. I also closed lots of loopholes and followed well-documented security procedures. I can only recommend other users to be similarly wary.
Currently, in my quarantine and/or deleted files, sit half a dozen copies of the bugbear virus. This is not a smug statement but an unasked for testament to Symantec that detected and weeded out the little buggers.
I am also on the mailing list for another antivirus security company. I had a warning from them, together with a statement that they would be releasing a protective patch with their next, formal update. Meanwhile, Symantec had done the business. Well done, peeps.
